Let me tell you what me and my family did…
My daughter Heidi (8 years) and I were both sat watching TV one night when we saw a documentary about Battery Farmed Hens, and how they live in such close confinement that they can hardly move.
Whilst it seemed easy to point blame, my husband and me knew that we had our own part to play and knew that we had to stop buying cheap eggs and cheap chickens from our local supermarket. And from that day onwards all we ever bought was free range.
Not too long after that my daughter went on a school trip to a local farm where she and others had the opportunity to see many barn animals, in particular baby chickens.
Of course from that point all our little Heidi wanted, and could ever talk about was a cute baby little chick.
Doing our little bit
At first my husband and me obviously said no, but after weeks of nagging we thought it best if we at least looked into it. We found a local source where we could buy baby chics before they where sent to the grim battery farms, we thought this was a good idea and made all of us feel like we where doing our little bit to help.

Of course we couldn’t just have them flapping all over next doors garden (our neighbour is very proud of his veggie patch), and we all knew that there are foxes in the area at night, so that’s where our search for a suitable shelter (chicken coop) started.
We looked around but we were soon shocked to realise how expensive pre-built chicken coops are, and although my husband is a dab hand when it comes to DIY (well he thinks he is), he still had no clue how to build a suitable and reliable Chicken Coop.
